Fireplace Mantle

Mantle

When we bought our house, one thing it did not have was a fireplace mantle.  Of any kind.  There were 8″ square white tiles around it and on the floor as a “hearth”.  After 13 years, it was time to change.  We ripped out the carpeting and pulled up the tile.  I replaced it with 3″ off white, tumble stone tiles.  The fireplace had a large flat black sheet metal apron above the grate that looked awful.  After looking at the specs for safety concerns, I tiled over it as well.

One evening, I made a simple (simple!) floating shelf that was up for a year over the fireplace.  Kim was ecstatic to have something.  We both knew it was a temporary measure as we decided what we wanted.

Eventually, we decided on a mission inspired design.  The twist was, as with most things I build, Kim wanted to be able to put lights on the shelf, but would NOT tolerate visible wires.  No cords running off the shelf and down the wall to an outlet.

Toyboxes for the girls

Baby in a box

Before a recent trip to visit one of our son’s family, he asked if I could whip up a couple toy chests for the grand girls.  Of course the answer was certainly.  I used a toy chest made by Tom Silva of This Old House as the model.  His video and page was very lacking basic information about sizes.  Hopefully, I can fill in some of the blanks.

First, a view of the finished toybox.  It is 18″ x 18″ x 34″.  The shelf on top is 5 12″ x 36″.

Bathroom Vanity

Finished Vanity

We put an addition on our house in 2014 to bring the master bedroom and bath to the first floor.  Just trying to avoid using the stairs (though, my shop is in the basement).  As we were picking things out, my wife spotted a bathroom vanity that she really liked.  Only problem was that it was $2,800.  She asked if I could build it for less.  But, of course!  “I just need a couple more tools” to do the job correctly.

Hello world!

I’m nothing but a hobbist.  Professionally, I’ve been in computer software development since 1970, and have recently retired.

In those intervening years, continued to add skills as I renovated and added to my homes.  My father was always handy, partnering with my mother to to raise 10 kids in Michigan.  He taught me much at a young age.  One of my earliest jobs as a teen was working in a small multi-store retail outlet.  Joe, one of the store owners, taught me more.

A couple years ago, I was finally able to bring my shop out of the garage and indoors.  Not a large space (are they ever big enough?), but sufficient.  And, it’s warm/cool as needed by the season.

So, here, I will catalog and chronicle my projects.
